What can be derived from these statistics?

Some observations of interest:

• The period of the Dominion War is the high point in episode quality for all of Star Trek. Not only was DS9 at its best at this point, but Voyager was soaring with incredible episodes as well.
• The lowest points in episode quality for all of Star Trek occur in the very beginning of TOS, the very end of TOS, most of TAS, and Ent season 2.
• DS9 started off extremely weak with the first two seasons being well below average. However, once TNG ended, DS9's quality began to shoot up very quickly.
• Enterprise had the strangest statistics of any Star Trek show with its episode quality jumping all over the place. Ent seasons 1 and 2 had averages that haven't been so low since TOS. Season 3 managed to climb up to TNG's level, and season 4 rivaled that of the Dominion War period, though not peaking as well as the Dominion War period.

So what can be concluded from those observations?

While this is better discussed in the detailed series analyses for DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise, simply stated Star Trek continued to improve until DS9 ended, with the Dominion War period being the best two years of Star Trek. The quality dropped slightly after DS9 ended and Voyager was the only show, then the quality dropped sharply when Enterprise took the helm. Enterprise's distinct and prolonged drop in quality effectively killed Star Trek; unfortunately the vast increase in episode quality Enterprise received in its fourth season was too little, too late.
